Our Philosophy
Committee for Early Childhood
Development Head Start utilizes
a complete child development program. We target the child’s
whole learning environment, including health, nutrition, literacy,
cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
We believe that parents are a child’s first teacher, since
they have the greatest influence on and responsibility for their
child. Regular home visits and parent conferences help us provide
continual opportunities for parents to develop competence in parenting
and child development and help increase parents’ self-respect
and confidence in the process.
The curriculum model at CECD is High /Scope. The main point of
this curriculum is the belief that all children, regardless of
age or ability, are able to make decisions and solve problems.
Active learning is a key ingredient in this philosophy. Children
learn better when they initiate the learning rather than being
traditionally “instructed” by the teacher. The classroom
environment is success oriented. Children learn through repetition,
new experiences, and self-individualized activities. Each child
learns at a different rate and in different ways.
Our program’s success is built upon an atmosphere of teamwork,
cooperation, and communication. Equally important is the trust,
respect, and confidence our team has for each other, regardless
of cultural and/or ethnic background.
We at Committee for Early Childhood Development Head Start are
committed to the philosophy that all children can learn. Therefore
all preschool children between the ages of three and five years
old living in this community deserve a comprehensive program of
activities designed to stimulate and foster a readiness for learning.
